Summary: Surface and porewater sampling, 3rd consecutive week of sampling after flooding
I met Erin at 12:00 pm at West Pond. The sky was blue and it was sunny, the air quality was moderate at around AQI 60. The aim of the visit was to do a quick sampling of surface and porewaters for the 3rd consecutive week after the wetland was flooded. The inlet is still on and the water level was at 71 cm. We sampled at the inlet, tower and 0.5 footprint site. We did not observe changes in conductivity or pH from our last visit, but overall the salinity at the wetland has increased slightly since the last time it was flooded (July and previous times in 2019-20). Samples between -20 and -40 cm seemed to be the most anoxic, as soon as these porewater samples were exposed to the atmosphere they turned to grey and a grey precipitate started forming. I do not recall having seen this before at WP although at MB it is more common (precipitate is brown-orange at MB) Readings at the tower (surface water) Conductivity: 706 uS Salinity: 0.3 ppt pH: 6.35 T: 18.6 C Average porewaters: Conductivity: 1086 uS Salinity: 0.6 ppt pH: 6.68 T: 18.2 C We processed the samples by the tower and left at around 4:45 pm. We plan to do the last consecutive week of sampling on Wednesday 14th. After that, we will sample once a month in November and December. |
