Summary: A Ci measurements
I arrived at 8:30 AM. The sky was clear with a mild breeze. The ears in the corn are large now, the bottom leaves are all senescing, but the upper leaves look healthy. A sticky substance impregnated my clothes as I moved into and out of the corn. Could it be "honeydew" from corn leaf aphids? (https://extension.entm.purdue.edu/fieldcropsipm/insects/corn-leaf-aphid.php#:~:text=The%20corn%20leaf%20aphid%20sucks,plants%20a%20black%2C%20sooty%20appearance.) I definitely saw tiny insects like that on the Li-6400. I took 3 ACi curves trying to get more points this time: 400,300,250,200,150,125,100,75,50,25,10,400,500,600,800,1000,1300 ppm. The leaves seemed water-stressed. The transpiration rates were low and the Ci remained very low. The attempts to do the last curves were frustrating because the Ci values were negative. The last curve I took has very low Ci values despite seemingly normal Assimilation responses to CO2. I collected the leaves and took them to the lab. I left at around 1:45 pm. |
