Reinstalled the soil CO2 sensors. The trees were leafless and dormant, grass was green and functioning, soil wet and soft.

East system, in the open, green grass

Zeroing the systems in the free air

West System, Near Oak Tree. Removed grass to separate the effect of respiration from tree roots vs grass roots and soil. The goal is to see if and when root respiration starts and how it is linked with canopy photosynthesis

CW2, Ch 2, sn X5050014, 4 cm: 0.50 m from bole

CW3, Ch 3, sn Z2720011, 8 cm: 0.50 mfrom bole

Zeroed the sensors, they were placed in the free air at the same level

Doubled checked data logger and sensors are reading on the right channels. Using same program as before, but reorganizing output on the west system. It is now in the order of 2,4,8,16 cm. Last time there was a mix-up in the order of the sensors on the logger.

The probes were put into gortex sacks again. Tube was inserted to desirable depth, sensor placed in tube and recessed so it won’t get wet during rain event. Good seal between sensor and vertical insert tube and soil is tight around tube.
