There was frost on the grass in protected places along the road to Vaira. I met Jim Vaira at the Vaira gate at about 9:30. We then went to another ranch they own near Fiddletown to put in staff gauges at a pond. In conversation Jim said that the cattle ranchers move cows around all the time depending on grass. At Vaira there are usually 40 to 60 cows on the land except for a period during mid dry season.

I returned to Vaira at about 12:30. It was cool, sunny with a little breeze. The grass is still growing and the soil is still damp, but no rain in the forecast for the next couple of weeks.

I calibrated the East profile of soil CO2 probes. I used some zero air to bring the chamber down close to zero CO2 at the end. While the calibration was running I fixed TC#2 to the North profile -4cm location. I cut chewed sections off both ends and remade the TC. I tried sticking it inside the tube with the probe, but there is not enough room between the probe and the tube. So I pushed it back into the ground on the north side of the tube. Iâ€™m not sure these temperatures are the best to use to correct the probe measurements in that the probes are probably much warmer inside the tubes.

I collected the data from the FD chambers then cleared their memories and cycled their power.

I swapped the USB stick on the 7500 to check on the large changes we saw in the H2O when swapping the heads last week.
