Summary: Tower-Campbell communication functional; performed clean up.
| When: July 2, D183 Where Tonzi Ranch Who: DDB and TH Weather: Hot and Clear Arrived around 930 PST. The Floor system was hung up at D181 2326. Otherwise the tower system was functioning properly and we had clean communication with the Campbells. Did lots of clean up. 1. Swapped sonic on the tower, as there was suspicion of its performance, from the past week. Though this morning it was working fine. Installed sn 000020 (~1200). 2. Ted set height and orientation pins on the sonic, so every time it is brought down it is put in the same place. The north indicator is not set to north yet. It is at the previous orientation. 3. The base of the sonic mount is 1.29 m above the top rail of the tower. The center of the LI-7500 is separated laterally 0.25m from the center line of the sonic. The midpoint of the open path irga is 0.35 m below the midpath of the sonic. 4. 1015 reset pc and data logger clocks according to GPS. Pc was reading 1017 and GPS was reading 1014. 5. Reset the software for PC208 so the data are called first then the tasks. Things were all out of synch and the Com 6 was being called every other day as some weird time. Tasks and loggers are polled every 30 min. 6. On logger Com 4 noted that channels 28, 30 and 32 are reading -9999 7. We swapped the PC box on the understory flux system (~1330 hours). The new box has a fan, but it is not insulated yet. Thermostat on the fan is set at 100F. The data logger on the tower was modified to include precip in milimeters. To do next time a. Chain for tower sonic placement pin b. Standarize Licor box mounts for both 1.5 and 2 inch pipe c. Build fold out arm for Rnet so we can clean it. It was dusty and bird crap was everywhere on the tower. We need to be able to service the radiometers more frequently and safely. d. Tower mount screw socket head cap with thumb knob. Visited Vaira. ~1500. 1. Hot and dry. Surface temp near 50C. Albedo on Par about 25%, low net radiation. 2. Lots of grasshoppers in the area and hanging around LI-7500. If we get spikes in data they may be due to grass hoppers. 3. Fixed the soil moistsure sensors, ch 2 and 5. The number 5 ch was open and blank. Installed sensor number 7 and buried it at about 23 cm. The soil was very hard and could not go deeper. To the touch the soil felt moist. Took a few grab samples of soil at about 10 to 20 cm for a general gravimetric reading. 4. Soil moisture sensor on the Ch 2 was #16. The cord had been chewed some. We installed sensor number #11. This sensor is installed in the surface layer. Readings of soil moisture sensors at 1600 are: Ch 1: 0.218 Ch 2: 0.107 Ch 3: 0.215 Ch 4: 0.272 Ch 5: 0.271 5. Gravimetric samples are in oven Sample 1, empty, 108.13, wet and container, 262.03 Sample 2, empty, 109.29, wet and container, 325.59 6. Flux system was operating ok. 7. Battery on cow fence is low. |
