Summary: Predawn and midday water potential,
| WHO: Nancy Kiang, Nina Kilham (technician in Tracy Benning's lab) WHERE: Tonzi Ranch WHEN: camped overnight, Wed-Thurs, 5/23-24/01 WEATHER: Wed 93°F, Thurs 88°F , grasses all brown, with interspersed wheatgrass(?) still green. WHAT: Measure pre-dawn and midday leaf water potentials and Leaf Area Index of transects. 5/24/01. -4:00 am DST (3:00 Std Time). Started pre-dawn water potentials. -Took 2 leaves of each sapflow tree for pre-dawn leaf water potential -Set P consistently -6 bar. Pine needles only -15 bar. -Set Q more variable, -4 to -8 bar. -Pressure bomb tank ending pressure at 500 PSI. -Measured LAI of transect T3 before dawn. -Sunrise ~ 6:10 am DST (5:10 am Standard Time) *Dataloggers of the LAI-2000's are on Standard Time. -15:00 DST measured midday leaf water potential. -Pressure bomb tank was unable to force lower than -22 bar. -Replaced pressure bomb tank with the spare tank at 800 PSI. -Midday leaf water potentials ranged -21 to -32 bar. -Pine tree extruded a lot of sap at first (around -5 bar) then water at -15 bar, same as the morning. -Recorded dendrometer band values. Notes: Next time re-fill both pressure bomb tank and spare tank in the lab to bring pressures of both to at least 1500 PSI. |
