Summary: Installed soil co2 system, need to reconfigure power system in the next few days. Reinstalled autocam.

Alfalfa
2014-08-13

I arrived about 9am with Patty. It was clear sunny and mild with a good breeze from the west. The Alfalfa is recovering from its most recent mowing. It doesn’t look as vigorous as earlier in the summer. The ground and roads are very dry and dusty.

We installed the soil respiration systems next to the radiation sensors with a power line trenched out to the site. The system is currently running on two car batteries in series for 24V. The plan was to convert the site to 24V and step down to 12v for the data loggers, but I forgot a power converter and tools for the security bolts on the solar panels. Hopefully the power conversion will be completed on 8/15.

The forced diffusion chamber sn FDC-11-13-006 is located between profiles A and B with profile A closer to the radiation post. Patty will upload a metadata file for this new set-up including distances between all probes etc. We also buried the three theta probes in a profile at 2, 8, and 16cm depth; these are located between the two profiles next to the reference soil temp rod.

All probes are the same from the latest Sherman set up: Profile A: 2cm sn K1340005, 8cm sn K1340007, 16cm sn G0150037. Profile B: 2cm sn F4960019, 8cm sn F4960018, 16cm sn Y0710013. Forced diffusion: 1 (atm): sn Z2720011, 2 (soil) sn H1630066.

I installed the auto camera the was removed from Twitchell. It ran just fine in the lab. It seemed to be running okay after installing.

The 7550 read: 385ppm CO2, 700mmol/m3 H2O, 94.3 SS, 101.4kPa, 26.37C
Met, rad and soil CO2 looked okay.

When I ran the 24V power line, I reinstalled the SHF plate that had been pulled and reinstalled at the edge of the field sn 6343 (I think). I also reburied some TC wires that had become exposed.

We also took spectral, clip plots and veg height--too short for LAI
*note-there is 1 extra downward facing spectral file I believe-sorry about that!

Veg Height (cm): Tape measure from ground to top of plant
30, 20, 12, 28, 30, 30, 30, 23, 27, 16, 30, 26, 15, 13, 27, 30, 27, 20, 32, 27, avg = 24.7, stdev = 6.37
