Trip Purpose: Repair CR23x3 at Vaira and Tower CO2 profile pump failure
Vaira Ranch:
5Aug 8:35 remove precip gage from boom arm as it is shading NDVI sensor. Perform 10 tip check sequentially beginning with 1 tip and ending with 10 tips. All went well with no errors. The gage is functioning correctly as is the data logger. Look elsewhere for the problem.

Cr23x3 voltage read at power plug with DMM = 12.32. On logger DRO = 11.9.

8:43 pull power plug on cr23x3 and the time and year were reset. This indicates that the logger ROM battery needs replacing.

Remove power return lead from the power plug, install a jumper wire and place the DMM in current mode in series to measure current draw.

Quiescent current = 50mA
MUX fire = 100mA
Aux mux volts = 12.39
soil moisture relay volts = 11.75
Power leads to soil moisture relay are 20 gage and are powered from cr23x3 – this should be corrected.

CR23x3 solar system
Under load solar panel volts = 15.23
Solar charge output/Batt volts = 12.55
Remove battery and solar volts = 16.2
Charge amperage = 95mA

Current from batts to CR23x3/Mux1/Mux2 = 150ma continuous, 200 when muxs fire and 250mA when soil moisture relay actuates.

Check all power cabling and with exception of soil moisture all appears well.

Note that I pulled a coax connector apart between cr23x3 and VDAC and this will need to be repaired upon my next visit.

6Aug05 07:00 arrive and continue diagnostics on CR23x3 power brownout.

9:00 discover loose connection on power return lead connector on battery. Correct this and the charge current rose from 100mA to 700 mA.

This is strong evidence this was the problem. The system was using a minimum 150mA continuously with only 100mA being delivered to charge the battery during daylight and this is not sufficient to charge the battery to full capacity.
