Summary: Reconnected soil probe, reprogrammed PC, site maintenance.
| June 8 - I arrived at the Vaira site and discovered one of the leads on the soil moisture probes was disconnected. I reconnected all the leads on all soil moisture sensors and we will have to look at the data to see if problems persist. Next I used the spare pc, 532 interface and md9 and verified that the 23x and its' md9 were working. Then verified that I could communicate thru the coax line and then used the sites 532 and base md9 with the spare pc and that worked fine. This indicates that the problem is software related. Because of the problem we had at Tonzi last week regarding the pc208 software I deleted the current setup and reprogrammed the whole mess and that did nothing to restore the communications. At that point I reverted to my favorite fall back and figured it was windows 98 causing the problem. I thought about reformatting the pc I removed from the tower to NT and installing it at Vaira but realized that I did not have PC208 setup disks nor the I/O socket software that drives the serial ports for communicating with the Campbell 532 interface. At this point I performed a disk defrag on the Vaira pc and that was successful in restoring communication with the 23x. Once again we have been bitten by Windows 98! Other maintenance at Vaira: 1. placed temp sensor for thermo couple reference directly on AM 416 mux and wire tied it in place 2. put heat shrink on pc power connector so it cannot pull apart 3. put cable tie mount on pc and wire tied pc power lead and I/O socket card lead onto pc to give better strain relief and avoid pulling power lead off 4. mount rain gauge with hose clamps replacing wire ties 5. install solar panel on fencer battery - fencer battery was down to less than 40% capacity 6. remove battery from pc |
