Summary: Tower diagnostics after failure of tower flux system.
| Hehn arrives 12:30 partly cloudy and hot with light breeze -Liukang informs me of failure of tower flux system Begin tower diagnostics: -Pc without power - Sonic and licor without power - Regulator enclosure has strong odor of electrical fire --- solar regulator in LED sequential flash mode indicating one of the following conditions: 1. load short circuit 2. high temp disconnect 3. high voltage disconnect 4. initial battery connection Positive lead to regulator battery connection showing visible signs of being burned indicating excessive current draw. However voltage is still present on these leads. Powering down/up regulator returns regulator to seq. flash mode. Remove load output leads from regulator and regulator returns to normal functioning. Continuity test on load leads indicates continuity (short circuit condition). No other signs of burned wiring or excessive heat. Disconnect all instruments from power buss and check all power leads for continuity – all instruments showing discontinuity (normal condition). Disconnect all tower power buss junction connections up and down tower to isolate each individual section from the others and check each individual section for continuity. Section from 23x data logger/regulator enclosure power buss to sonic xlator enclosure power buss indicates continuity. This is a 20-22 gage wire (small). Replace with 16 gage wire and all systems return to operation. |
