Siyan and I arrived at about 11:00am. It was warm and sunny with little to no wind. There was some rain in the wee hours of the morning of the 20th. The ground is still dry but the dead grass may be a little less brittle with the moisture. The trees still have leaves, but there are dead leaves on the ground under the trees.

I installed FD chamber sn 20160002 near the Open co2 soil profile. The chamber started up just fine this time â€“ must have been too warm to start last time. I collected data from both chambers but did not clear their memories.

I finally got the Vaisala CO2 calibration to run. Previous attempts were partially foiled by a program bug where the scan time and â€œif timeâ€ for output were the same. The trick was to remove the â€œif timeâ€ statement and to just set the output flag high each scan. I ran the cal system at the Open profile, then the Tree 1 profile and then the Tree 2 profile for about 20min in each location. I need to double check the order in which the probes are connected to the data logger.

I also worked on the CO2 profile system on the tower. I got the system powered with two DC-DC converters to step down the 24V from the batteries to 12V for the pump, data logger and solenoids. The LI-820 can run directly on the 24V. The pump was okay, the analyzer looked good and the data logger was okay once I reset its clock. But all but one solenoid were stuck. I brought in the solenoid set to see if I can get it unstuck. I left the 10x running but disconnected the LI-820. There is a null modem in the box at the base of the tower but it would be nice to have one at the LI-820 so that we can plug in with a laptop.

Siyan did all the standard fieldwork and data collection.
