Summary: Soil respiration measurements intitiated.

Francesca Ponti and Kevin Tu started soil respiration and del C13 measurements to deduce the fractions of respiration from soil and roots.

Transects are set up on the Vaira ranch with collars separated 10 m, north and south of the tower.. The collars are 6 cm height and inserted 3 cm in the soil.

Soil cores are taken and roots and raw soil are separated. Keeling curves were measured to get del 13C of the constituents. Using

Del C root+soil= f del root + (1-f) del soil

The intercepts are:
Root -22.83
soil+root -25.93
soil -30.33


They were able to deduce that root fraction was 0.5866 and soil was 0.4134 of the soil/root resp.

Questions remain on sampling with period of pre-dark, volume of cylinder and role of plants on the Keeling plots. Great start. Soil cores are taken for N and C content too.
