Summary: Removed 4 of 6 new batteries to fix charging issues.

7 Dec01

Vaira

Solar fence battery volts = 11.99 volts

Change PVM angle to 30 degree from vertical

Remove 6 old batteries

Install 2 new batteries, cables and anticorrosion compound

V reg= 13.7
PVM current = 8.7 - 9.6 noon sun with high thin wispy clouds
load current = 2.2

Tonzi Floor

V reg = 13.7
PVM current = 8.0 noon sun with high thin wispy clouds
load current = 2.2

Remove 4 of 6 of new batteries so only 2 are being used

Note: Dennis and I discussed placing 6 new batteries at each of the
sites. I installed 6 new batteries at Tonzi floor on Thursday and shortly
afterwards I realized that our flux platforms were running fine during the
day when power is available but failed to operate overnight. This is so
because the 6 PVMs deliver current that varies between 2 and 15 amp over
the diurnal cycle. The flux platform uses 3 amp and the remaining current
(0 to 12 amp) is used to charge batteries. If (big if) we got the full 12
amp of charge current over the diurnal cycle it would take 50 hours to
charge the 6 - 100 amp-hour batteries (600 amp-hour/12 amp = 50 hours).
Trying to charge 6 - 100 amp-hour batteries will not work well since we do
not get 50 hours of sunlight in a diurnal cycle!

By cutting the battery capacities from 600 to 200 amp-hour the time to
charge with 12 amp will be 16 hours, much more easily achievable.

Anyway, the floor and vaira systems now have only 2 - 100 amp-hour
batteries and the tower system has 4. We will be able to analyze their
performance and determine which functions better over the next week or 2
and make necessary modifications. I would not be surprised if we have to
go to only 1 - 100 amp-hour battery at each site so we fully charge the
battery daily -- even on cloudy days which would be ideal for continuous
data capture.
