Tonzi: 2001-11-10 10:30:00 (DOY 314)
Author: Dennis Baldocchi
Others: Liukang Xu

Summary: Power on tower was down upon arrival; installed moisture point MP 917 soil probes; swapped licors.

Field notes

Who: Db and Lx
Where: Tonzi/Vaira
When: D310 Nov 10, 2001

Arrived around 1030.

1. Power on the Tower system was down. The plug to the pc has poor contact. With some jiggling we got it up and running.
2. Moved raingauge above the solar panels
3. Noticed lots of bird manure on solar panel. We need a mop and water to clean them occasionally
4. The net radiometer was slightly dirty. We need to either adjust the mount, so it can be rotated up and cleaned or have a cleaning device on an arm to reach the sensor.
5. Changed code on CR23x. The time of the watch dog reset was changed from 1500 ms to 6000 ms. This was on instruction 22. We need to download and save changes to PC. This was not done.
6. Installed Moisture point MP 917 soil probes. The probes are segmented and measure soil moisture at 15 cm increments down to 60 cm. Sensors were put near the tower sn 00000931AFE , near the floor system sn 000000402165, near the floor solar panel sn 000000574B4B, near a sap flow tree sn 000000402FF3 and in between the soil respiration transect sn 000000574632. Three sensors are under trees and 2 are in the open. Whenever someone goes to the site, please make measurements of these probes manually. The electronics are in the storage box and the cable is stored in the tool box, to protect it from rodents.
7. We moved the fence and protected the understory solar panel system
8. We moved the un connected solar panel array to the old fencing.
9. Rain was expected the next day. A very little grass is germinating from the Oct 31 rain, but not much.
10. battery voltage on the CR 23 x on the tower was 11.3 volts. It is not connected to the solar array.

Vaira, 1500 hours

1. Swapped licors. sn 0041 came off and sn 0042 went on
2. Installed two moisture point soil moisture sensors
3. The range has been much heavily grazed, compared to Tonzi.
4. Low soil moisture values in top level, may be an artifact of installation and gaps between sensor and soil. It need to adjust. Deep soil moisture values are much lower than oak savanna at Tonzi, circa 11% vs ~18 to 20%.
