| Twitchell Island 3-18-2009 I met Frank at Twitchell Island at about 10:30. We took a look at Field 1 and talked to Jim Casey. Below are notes from Frank an others: General Objectives: Meet with Joe Varfaillie from UCB to discuss Met tower logistics and possible time frame to begin measurements. Swap out YSI at main drain and take down telemetry setup. Notes from Jim Casey: Field 1 was sprayed with Herbicide around 3/5/09, Jim said he could find out the exact chemicals sprayed, if needed. There are pictures at: Z:\Twitchell (Rice & CCWF)\Rice\photos182009, for those of you who do not have internal access to the pictures and would like to see what the field looked like, just let me know and I can send a picture or two. They plan to run a light till on Field 1 in about two weeks. There was no mention of fertilizer application, but I think that was discussed in the past as the time when they would apply the fertilizer. The alfalfa fields to the South of the rice fields were sprayed with Herbicide about three weeks ago, once again Jim can find out the exact chemicals applied. Fields 10, 11, 12 (West of Field 1) are Oats this year and will be rice next year. They plan to harvest as early as the end of April, but as late as June. Also later Objective: Hg sampling at Twitchell 3/24/09 Jim Casey Notes - There is now a back-up structure for water application to the fields that will draw water from drain 2-1 (see Twitchell Rice folder at the following address for pix; ftp://ftpext.usgs.gov/pub/wr/ca/sacramento) - Round-up was the chemical used to spray field 2-3 weeks ago - Water applied to fields during first round (before wells cleared with county) came out of the canal, Half of water applied in round 2 (last week of Feb.) was syphoned and the other half came out of the canal. - Interest in leveling field 1 but machine currently is out of commission - Tentative plans to begin planting in 20 days - There is a new screw gate in drain 2-1 and as a result the berm (previously instrumented for flow data) was removed. |
