9/2/2010 Birds, flies, wind in trees Tonzi summer afternoon Quiet heat, peaceful I arrived with Siyan about 5:20am. It was clear and cool, but not cold. Before sun rise there was a significant increase in air temperature when I climbed the tower. That is, the top of the tower was warmer than the bottom. Before dawn the wind was from the east, later in the morning wind was from the west, and a possible switch again to the east in the afternoon. Leaves on the trees are beginning to turn yellow and seem to be falling in larger numbers. No sign of recent rain. Predawn readings from the solar charge controllers: Floor: 12.5V, 0.0 solar Amps, 2.1 load Amps. Tower: 11.9V, 0.0 solar Amps, 4.9 load Amps. Tram solar charge controller at midday: 27.8V, 0.5 solar Amps, 0.0 load Amps – both tram and charging station almost fully charged. I swapped the cards in the zenith cameras, cleaned the glass with alcohol, and tested with the new cards with the canopy lit with a flash light. I moved the tipping rain bucket from its position under the sonic, IRGA and tower structure on the south west corner of the tower to a location above the railing on the south east corner. I cleaned out dirt that was plugging the funnel. Probably a few errant tips around 6:30am PDT. I changed the desiccant in the pryanometer and cleaned the radiometers. The HMP45 fan was running as was the CO2 profile pump. The bird spikes on the sonic look a little askance but I did not try to straighten. I began work on getting two of the sap flow stations back online as bole temperatures. About 8:30am we went to Vaira to do standard field work and work on misbehaving tipping bucket there. We returned to Tonzi about 10am. The sap flow stations are: CR10X11 is to the south of the Tower running program C478 (two oaks and a pine) and has been running continuously. This logger is on Com7 at the Tower. CR10X13 is to the east of the Tower running program C56 (Two oaks) and was down due to bad connections to the battery, loss of its program, and a bad serial port on the computer. This logger was on Com8 at the tower, but this seems to have broken so I moved it to Com5 which was used for the UC Davis surface renewal system that was removed previously. The problems have been fixed and a 12V regulator was add between the solar panel and the battery. This system is back online with the heater disabled. CR10X *B status readings: Prog Sig 273.00, Os sig 27061, Memory k 0256, E08 errors 00 (reset), table overruns 00, OS ver 9801.0, Revision 0022, Li bat 2.6615, low 12V 00 (reset), Ext mem err 9H, ext mem erase 31.215 CR10x15 is to the west of the tower running program C1 (one oak) and was down due to a bad solar panel, bad battery, and loss of program. This logger is on Com9 at the Tower. After replacing the battery and solar panel and adding a 12V regulator I was able to reload the program from the tower computer. This system is back online with the heater disabled. CR10X *B status readings: Prog Sig 32374, Os sig 26114, Memory k 0000 (2MB), E08 errors 00 (reset), table overruns 00, OS ver 1.0000, Revision 0007, Li bat 2.9266, low 12V 00 (reset), Ext mem err 00, ext mem erase 15.5 CR10X17 is across the road to the north of the Tower running program C23 (two oaks) and has been running continuously. This logger is connected to the Floor computer. All the sap flow sensors seem to be mounted on the northern side of the trees. There are thermocouples above and below the heater but seemed to be connected electrically giving an average temperature I add a folder called DailyRename to the D:\Programs folder on the Tower computer. This folder has the doyofyear.exe program and I made batch files to rename the CR10X11, CR10X13 and CR10X15 *.dat files shortly after 1am every day. Siyan copied the latest data files. I noticed that there seems to be a scheduled task running on the Floor computer to get images from a web cam. This is unnecessary I think but left it for more careful consideration. I checked the battery in the IRT sensors. It was still above 12V. I down loaded the data from the data logger. |
