Field Notes

<--2005-04-09 00:00:00 | 2005-06-23 00:00:00-->

Vaira: 2005-04-29 09:30:00 (DOY 119)
Author: Dennis Baldocchi
Others: Nicole, Albedo (dog)

When: April 29, 2005, D119
Where: Vaira Ranch
Who: Dennis Baldocchi, Nicole and Albedo
Weather: Cool and partly cloudy. Had rained overnight. The grass is seeded, tall and bending over from the previous nights rain. Grass in the fenced area resembles that in the open field.

0930

Power systems 13.6 Batteries; 10 amps power; 1.8 amps load.

Rain cleaned the sonics, solar panels and radiometers.

Flux system on scale
W: -0.3; u: -.086; v: 1.5; T: 16.8; q: 2.; c 1.91

Tsoil was about 14.2 C, Battery voltage: 11.9; Tair was 16.3, RH 67. Cloud passed and PAR 398 and PAR diffuse 391, so good response.

Tonzi Ranch

Tower Power: 14.6 v batteries; load 4.6 amps. The load is high. Can we sustain this over the next winter. New batteries (6) have been installed. I suspect the high current is partly battery recharge.

Floor power: 13.8 V; 14 amp generated; 1.8 amp load.

Downloaded data at all the sites.

Flux system on scale
W: -0.38; u: -.45; v: .18; T: 17.08; q: 2.38; c 1.77. Q and C are still noisy compared to floor and Vaira.

CO2 profile. Is working really well. Strong gradient after rain and strong respiration pulse. Zero offset is -1.1 and span was 427.6 ppm. With offset corrected calibration is real close to the cal gas.

CO2 1500 psi; N2: 1500 psi.

Checked Met sensors and they seem on range and operating.

Soil CO2 probes were on scale under the tree and several thousand ppm, but these are 20,000 and 30,000 ppm sensors, so their scaling needs adjustment.

CO2 is the open were off scale and over 10,000. CW4 was "on scale", but only 54 mv. Was concerned it was problematic and checked wiring etc.. Resistor was 250 ohm. Box read 0.24% or 2400 ppm for this sensor. This voltage seems low by a factor of 10. I checked it with the dvm and it was consistent with the datalogger.

I was also getting an ER 12 code, which is sensor failure.

We also need to know if jumper was set for a 4 or 0 mA offset. Ted had the 250 ohm resistor across the 0 to mA signals and read the voltage off the current. Need to check if this is how the others are wired.

Looks like we may need to swap it out. #4 16 cm sn z2720013, 1%. So it is problematic and needs replacement.
