Notes on 4/10/03 field visit
Tess and Jianwu

Arrived at 9:30 and set up our experiments. Everything was green. I was noticing how explosive leaf-out was, variations in leaf size, etc.

The morning started out partly cloudy and then cleared by about 10:45 or so. Cool and not very breezy.

Checked out Tonzi floor site at about 10:35 am. Every thing was in order.

LED’s on the solar array monitor were green
Volts 13.8
Array current 15.8
Load current 2.3

Watchdog values of traces were all reasonable. I am curious about the perturbation to w’ that I sometimes see as I walk up to the tower.

W -0.240 +- .132
U – 0.670 +- .43
V 0.670 +- .122
T 26.273 +- .209
h2o 2.417 .094
co2 1.702 +- 0.01

On the CR10X1 Par_calib -9999. L_PAR1 0.0 LPAR_2 0.0
On the CR10X2 Inloc 28, 29, 30, 31 were 0.00
On the CR10X4 ratio -9999. hpr_7,hpr_8, hpr_9, hpr_13,14,15 -9999.
The CR10X5 was not communicating with the laptop. Perhaps the battery is dead. Ted suggested taking the CR10X watchdog from the met station at the base of the tall tower and checking the values, using *6 on the keypad. Not sure if Nancy logged battery volts in this way or not. Or, take a voltmeter from the Rubbermaid bin and check the battery voltage directly. Ted says, make sure the voltmeter leads are plugged into volts and not amps when you check a car battery, or you will blow a fuse.

Looks like some of Nancy’s heater probes have burnt out. That’s probably what hpv stands for. Ted and I will go through Nancy’s programs and see if we can diagnose them. When I have time in the field, I will play around with replacing a heater probe.

That’s it for the floor site.

I visited the tall tower site later in the afternoon. Ted has rewired the solar array so that we can no longer check solar amps. It reads 0.0 and there are no wires leading to that part of the monitor. There is a new LED monitor at the base of the tower – Ted sunk a fencepost and hung a new box. Apparently there is a red LED that we don’t know how to use yet: it blinks 3,4,5 times to indicate the status of the solar array. There is a new 60-amp regulator in that white box at the base of the tower. For now, the best thing to do is check the battery status using the green LED at the base of the tower. We can’t check the solar amps directly, but we can see if the batteries are charging. I believe the old regulator/monitor near the solar arrays near the top of the tower still works as well, you just can’t check the solar amps. The aspirators were running, and the power supply seemed to be fine.

Volts 13.5
Load current 2.5

The CO2 infrared instrument at the top of the tower has a set of prongs that I didn’t remember seeing before. One of the prongs is missing – there are only 2 out of 3.

Other than that, instruments were clean and level.

I confused myself by thinking that I needed a separate laptop to check traces. I remembered my visit with Dennis where we climbed the tower and plugged in a laptop directly to the data logger. As a result, I DID NOT CHECK THE TRACES AT THE BASE OF THE TOWER. I must not have opened the boxes at the met station on the ground. Will try to be more thoughtful next time!

We left around 4:30 that day and encountered light rain showers on our way back.
