Summary: Tried to install 2 sippers but ground was too hard, shadowband not working--fixed

Gilbert Tract

Kyle, Mel, and I arrived at 10:05 PDT. It was a bit later than usual because of two slowdowns: Hwy 242 was closed and there was a car on fire on Hwy 680 N between 242 and 4. Mel is a new grad student in Iryna’s lab interested in mammal/bird benefits from wetland restoration projects.

It was near low tide and a beautiful fall morning, sunny and mild with a light breeze. The staff gauge read 35cm at 9:39 PST.

Mel immediately picked up a bright green frog on the back of her shirt. Maybe a tree frog.

Kyle got started with installing Sedpoints off of the boardwalk. We had two extra Sedpoints in the lab: one that we removed from Mayberry recently (metal tip, no screen) and one from the lab (no metal tip, no screen). She installed them as far as she could, 10-15cm below the surface, but then wasn’t able to sample because the tubing would immediately clog with clay or other fine particles.

I showed Mel how to clean and flux and rad sensors. She also topped off the reservoir. I downloaded met, cam, and USB GHG data. I downloaded the miniDOT data and changed its desiccant. The rotating shadowband was not working. Swapping the motor seemed to fix it. I also releveled the sensor as it was slightly tilted to the south.

The 7500 read: 403ppm CO2, 550mmol/m3 H2O, 17.9C, 101.1kPa, 101--103SS after cleaning
The 7700 read: 2.05ppm CH4, 47RSSI– 72 after cleaning

We got to the channel at 11:20 PDT to download Flo’s data. Kyle downloaded the data, reset the clock, and restarted logging. I got in the channel to try to clear some weeds. There were many drops in the data, but it looked clear in front of the sensor (plenty of weeds between the sensor and the bank).

We left at 11:40 PDT.
